Another scam I have been noticing, even ON HERE, is people claiming abuse/loss of stuff, and attempting to social engineer a free ride in the form of services, replacement of goods, etc.

If someone tells you in-game about a loss, and asks for means to recoup it, unless its someone in your guild and you trust them, assume it's China at work again

Just need this confirmed...
This is confirmed, and my friend and I fell victim to it. He fell first, then sold it to me... I am mad at him right now.

The "scam" I fell for until last night was selling anything that looked powerful to the merchant before identifying it. He may offer up 2gp, but after an ID it is usually worth 4-20gp (pre-sear stuff). So ID before selling and you should come out ahead. ID means you also get a price for the item in gp.

i am not saying its a good thing....BUT...doesnt it make it a little more life emmersive if theres scam artists, thieves and vagabonds in the guild world ?

i read this and felt sorry for the robbed, but i had a slight admiration for the robber for even being in the game.

for without them,it would be a mary poppins world

also nice to be warned too, thanks.

Another Dye based scam I've seen is "Gold Dye".
A player was offering Gold Dye in the trade channel.
When I questioned him about it and informed him that there was no such thing he said someone else had sold it to him, claiming it was rarer than black.
After further questioning I managed to ascertain that the Colour listed for this dye was Mix, and thus it was just a mix of yellow and orange or something like that, so that in the bottle it looks gold.
This demonstrates once again the importance of looking at the stats of an item before you buy it.
It's not gold dye unless it says Color: Gold.

In pre-sear, everyone tried to scam you for dye. For the heck of it, I just shouted 'Black dye, um, whats a good amonunt? 50 gold!' And around 500 people whispered me.

Ofcourse I've also bought black and silver gold for under 200 gold there, but thats just welcoming players to Guild Wars!

The first dye I found in presearing was silver and I decided to sell it for 10g since I could only get 1g for it from the marchant. The person who bought it from me gave me 20g.

i posted screenshots proving the whole scam to the devs. here is the response i got from a GM:

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch with the Guild Wars Support Team in regards to this issue. We will use the information you have provided to investigate whether a violation of the rules has occurred. All information related to the discovery and disciplining of an account will only be discussed between the violator and customer support. If we do find that a rule or rules were broken, you will not hear of any rulings related to the incident and the account(s) involved.

However, when a trade between players leaves one of them feeling he or she was scammed is often an issue of trust rather than a violation of our rules or use of a bug/exploit. We can certainly sympathize with you that this must be a very frustrating situation, but we consider such non-violation scams to be a player-matter to be resolved in-game. We are unable to return any of the items lost to you. Please understand that once you give out, loan or otherwise release control of an item to a person, you are in effect giving it to that person of your own free will. We can only ask that you be more cautious in the future when exchanging items with other players.

Please contact us again if you need further assistance,

- The Guild Wars support team
which basically is just a polite way to say that NCSoft knows this is a scam, but doesn't care. NCSoft clearly has has a pro-scammer policy when it comes to Guild Wars.

perhaps scamming should be promoted on the GW boards as a way to make gold, since NCSoft is fine with it and it's totally legal according to them

well...at least NCSoft will check this forum now and again and make sure future builds will EXCLUDE scammers, via e-mail, and via posting on Official Forums.

Haha, you make me laugh, NCSoft is pro scams hahaha.

Dont try and blame your mistake on someone else, you screwed up not NCSoft. They do this beacuse if they "gave" you back iteams or gold, it would be easy to scam them.

You and a friend set it up so it looks like you got scamed, they give you "back" your "lost" item. You now have two of the same item and you did nothing to get it.

That is why they arent going to give back your gold/items. Blame no one but you, it was your folly no one else's.

ok. i see your point

but i have a counterpoint

in the end, i did not really take a "loss".

because after i got the response from the GM that they are not going to help me, and that scamming is "technically legal"...i chose to solve my problem rather than lose the 200 gold that i was scammed for.

i marked up the price to 500, and scammed another guy out of that by selling the ashes to him.

now his only way to break even is to scam yet another person for at least 500 gold. and so the scamming chain must continue on and on, since it's the only remedy for being scammed.

plus, once it catches on how all this scamming is legal, tons of people are going to be doing it.

so either way... scammers win, honest players lose.

Easy way of stopping scamming.

Be more careful! Its only like in real life, dont go giving your money away without thinking "is it worth it" beforehand.

Seems simple to me

ArenaNet obviously want to keep their policing at a minimum. There is no monthly fee, so there isn't a lot of money to keep a policeforce.

As long as people do their spamming and scamming by in-world means, I doubt they will show a big interest. In-world spamming and scamming is, as someone said, quite an rp element. People shouting praise for their warez at a market square is quite medieval, so are con artists.
